Tennessee Hosts Annual Dental Initiative for Youth

Instructions

On May 7, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center's College of Dentistry will conduct its annual Give Kids A Smile Day in Memphis. This event offers free dental care to over a hundred students from local schools, emphasizing the college’s dedication to community service and oral health education. The initiative, originally established by the American Dental Association in 2003, aims to provide essential oral healthcare services to children in underserved areas. With approximately 150 volunteers contributing this year, including faculty and students, the day-long program includes various dental procedures performed under professional supervision.

This year marks an important milestone as the College extends its services to older students from Soulsville Charter School, joining Freedom Preparatory Academy participants. The event involves comprehensive preventive and restorative treatments such as examinations, cleanings, fillings, extractions, and fluoride applications, all conducted at no cost. Third- and fourth-year dental students, along with dental hygiene students, are actively involved, gaining valuable experience while enhancing their clinical skills through interaction with diverse cases.

The support from Delta Dental of Tennessee's Smile180 Foundation plays a crucial role in facilitating these efforts. Cassandra Christiansen, director of School-Based Programs and Community Outreach, highlights the significance of this partnership in recognizing the hard work and dedication of all participants. By expanding outreach to include middle and high school students, the initiative addresses more complex oral health challenges often overlooked during adolescence.

Tonya Biles, representing Soulsville Charter School, expresses enthusiasm about participating in this transformative event. She notes the importance of ensuring holistic well-being among students and families, especially during pivotal developmental years. Through educational sessions and direct care, the event empowers young individuals with knowledge and resources necessary for maintaining long-term oral health.

Through initiatives like Give Kids A Smile, the College of Dentistry reinforces its commitment to public service. Year-round, it strives to reduce barriers to accessing oral healthcare within the Memphis community, offering affordable or free services to thousands in need. This ongoing effort strengthens the institution's mission to foster healthier communities through education and accessible care solutions.
